Todorov

Todorov's narrative theory consists of 5 stages. They are:

Equilibrium: everything is normal
Disruption of equilibrium: something upsets the normal balance of life
Recognition of disruption: something effects the hero
Attempt to repair the disruption: the hero goes on his quest
Equilibrium is restored: the hero defeats the villain

The All-American Rejects- Gives You Hell

Equilibrium: Everything appears fine with each neighbours coming off as happy people who have their own distinct way of living

Disruption of equilibrium: At 0:51 the more conservative neighbour (neighbour 1) wakes up and is shaking his head in disapproval at the music that the neighbour 2 is playing

Recognition of disruption: At 1:20 neighbour 1 starts playing his music in the morning resulting in neighbour 2 waking up with the rest of his band, going outside and shouting across the street at him showing the audience this conflict between the two had now been recognised

Attempt to repair the disruption: It comes in towards the end of the video after multiple confrontations between the neighbours before the wives of the two step in and attempt to repair the conflict by swapping with each others partner

Equilibrium is restored: The videos end with each of the neighbours now with one another wives doing the things that they were originally arguing such as neighbour 1 playing in the band, singing and enjoying himself.

Wheatus- Teenage Dirtbag

Equilibrium: The teenage boy has fallen asleep and is dreaming of his daily life at school, telling the audience that he is not a popular kid with his bike immediately being ran over by a stereotypical "jock"

Disruption of equilibrium: All the focus is suddenly on a girl that is dating this jock indicating that this music video is going to become a love story between the popular girl and the high school loser

Recognition of disruption: At 2:16 the popular girl walks away from her boyfriend in disgust due to him and his friends teasing the main character. Because it is already established that the main characters life has been disrupted by this girl that he wants to be with, we can now assume that he will get his chance to be with her.

Attempt to repair the disruption: The popular girl realises that this teenage boy has a crush on her and attempts to resolve this by walking over to him at their prom and asking him out on a date to a concert.

Equilibrium is restored: After this, at 2:27 the two of them begin to dance before the disco ball appears to fall down on top of the main character and wake him up from this dream meaning he his back to his normal life.
