Treatment ideas

Orson- No Tomorrow

My Idea

The song No Tomorrow by American pop rock band, Orson, was my initial idea for a song to use for my groups video production. The video would have a mixture of both narrative and performance and would because of the up beat tune and fast pace, along with some relatable lyrics would be set at a house party with a humorous  approach being taken. The narrative would follow a fairly "Geeky" looking individual who looks out of place at this party as it is surrounded by attractive popular looking young people as well as the band who is playing in one of the rooms. To get this effect that the main character was a "geek" and he was surrounded by popular people, costume would need to be focused on a lot. For the "geek" we would dress him up in a sweater with his shirt collar sticking out, a pair a black square frame glasses with a piece of tape in the middle and overall give that very smart presentable look to him but from his characteristic, small frame and comb over hair, keep that "geek" look. Whilst thinking of this idea i very much pictured an American style party with the popular people being very attractive cheerleaders and "Jocks". To continue with the narrative, it would start of with the main character walking through the door to see a corridor full of attractive males and females leaning against the wall talking to each other, drinking and giving looks of amusement to the main character. This doesn't faze him as he continues to looking happy and waving at random people whilst on his way to get a drink. At this time we would start to see the performance as the camera cuts to a variety of different close ups and medium shots of the band playing. The look of the band would be very unique from what is being seen around the house as the band would neither dress up in an obnoxious American "jock" sort of way or have a geeky style, but instead would look very stylish with checkered shirt, plain t-shirts, jackets and other styled clothing. As the narrative continues the geek is now on his way through the house trying to talk to girls on to get a strange look back as the girls then walk away, but this still doesn't faze the character as he continues to look happy. The camera now cuts to the the band performing again with more different shots of them playing. As the song is approaching the end the last part of the narrative is now being shown with the geek now entering the same room the band are playing in. As the geek starts to bob his head to the beat of the tune he begins to talk to girls again only to get the same reaction as previously show, but this time he does look fazed and fed up with all this rejection. The camera cuts to the lead singer of the band noticing the geek looking fed up and gets him up on stage in which the geek responds surprised but starts to play and sing with the band now looking like he's enjoying himself. The rest of the song continues with this until the end where the music stops but the narrative continues with the geek getting off stage looking happy and being cheered by all the popular people. In this short period of time he notices a girl that is also looks a lot like a geek in which he goes off with her. With parts of miss-en-scene such as the costume and location figured put, the props that surround everyone on the party are the next thing to address. As i said previously, when thinking of this idea i kept picturing the idea of an American style party and by giving off that effect in the video only one prop is really needed which is the red plastic cups which are seen in every single American house party scene. Of course to make it look like a party other props such as confetti and perhaps balloons are needed, and with the performance being vital for the video instruments are needed.

Group Idea

When we came together as a group we decided that we would use my song choice which was No Tomorrow by Orson, but collectively we thought that it would be very difficult to pull of a house part as we would need a free house, instruments to be taken to the house and along with that we would have to  have a lot of people in which that would not only be difficult to get but also difficult to control. Therefore we decided to keep with the mixture of narrative and performance but change the narrative to an easier yet very effective and unique one. For our narrative we decided for it to be mostly shot in first person by using a Go-pro camera strapped onto the actors head, and it would follow his morning in which he wakes up late for band practice and tries to get there in time, but along the way gets into a few mishaps. The video would begin with the character waking up turning off his alarm which is surrounded by empty beer bottles. The video would then cut to the band in a studio shrugging as if they don't know where the main character is, and then they will start to play. The narrative will continue with the main character rushing to getting ready, with jump cuts of him brushing his teeth, pouring milk into his cereal and other things that are involved with a morning routine. The character will then exit the house and after two steps will realise a bird has pooed on him in which he looks up to the sky and shakes his fists in anger. Shot of the band performing will now be shown for a short period of time. The narrative would continue and the mishaps would now begin with the first one starting with two men coming out of a house carrying heavy objects. The main character notices the men struggling and goes over to help them put the objects in their car. As the man closes his car boot and pats the main character on the shoulder in thanks, the main character hears a noise from behind and as he turns around he sees a man shouting at them as he is on the phone. The main character then turns to the men he has just helped to see them pull down their balaclavas and get in the car. Noticing the men that he just helped were in fact robbers the main  character begins to run away from the scene and at this point the video is now showing the band performing again. As the narrative continues the main character is about to get into another problem, as he walks down the street he is confronted by a man dressed up i a beer bottle costume handing out "drink responsibly" leaflets. The band member pushes the mans hand away rudely as he is in a rush and this aggravates the man to confront him but leads to the band member pushing him over. Followed by a few weird looks from the public the band member looks at the man on the floor who is now extremely angry and with this gets up as if he's about to hit the main character, and with this the main character begins to run away. After this the video again cuts to a variety of shots of the band performing. The video then goes back to the main character running but seeing a place in which he can hide and as he gets to that place he enters to find a cult ritual going on with about 5 hooded people in a circle with candles surrounding them whilst they are on there knees bowing. The band member puts out his hands to signal he is pure confusion at which point one of the cult members quickly turns around looking at him in which the reaction is to run away again. As the song is coming to an end the camera is now shooting the last of the band performing until the end of the song. Even though the song is now over the narrative continues and it is now of the band member finally arriving to the studio and as he opens the door the camera is on the other side finally showing the audience the face of the character in which he slumps and looks disappointed as the studio is now empty signalling he is too late. As the character turns back around he is greeted by the man in the beer bottle and a punch to the face in which his fist comes towards the camera and blacks out the video ending it. There will be many locations in this video such as; A studio, a suburban housing estate, a bedroom, a sidewalk and an empty mysterious room. Since most of the video is shot in first person using the Go-pro camera the costumes on really need to be focused on the band members. They will be wearing stylish clothes that are associated with the hybrid genre of pop rock, so jackets checkered shirts etc. The other costume we need for the video is the beer costume for the man handing out leaflets. The props that will be needed for this include; empty beer bottles, candles, instruments, a cult symbol, hoods, cardboard boxes, balaclavas and suncream to replicate bird poo.
