Firth

Firth said that music vides can be characterised by 3 broad typologies. The first one was "Performance" which was all about how the artists tried to convey the sense of being at one of there concerts. The second category was "Narrative" which very linear stories , with love stories being the most popular, being displayed in the music video. Finally, the last of the three is "Conceptual". This involves metaphors to create a mood and offer multiple meaning.

One music video that i have chosen which displays how Performance is used successfully is, "Foo Fighters- These Days". Throughout the video, various shots of the concert are taking place to show the audience what a good atmosphere their concerts generate. At one point in the video the lead singer even stops and lets the audience sing that part of the song. This gives it a real sense of involvement and will encourage more people to try and attend their concerts. 

Tim Berg- Seek Bromance is a song that displays the use of Firth's Theory in it's music video. This time, "Narrative" is shown. The video begins with  a teenage male leaving his house with his dad shouting at him, his two friends are they and the video continues to show them taking a road trip and ultimately getting drunk and sleeping with the girl they were with the whole time. The end of the video especially links in to what Firth said about narrative based videos,  which was, "Action is the story dominated by males who do things and females who passively react or wait for something to happen". As i said, the video ends with the two males friends sleeping with the female friends which links in with what Firth said. 

Finally the conceptual stage of Firth's theory can be seen in the music video "Around the world" by "Daft Punk". The whole point of a conceptual music video is to convey the video with multiple meanings rather than one straight narrative. You can take whatever meaning you see from All around the world, but the main point is that this video never follows a narrative or shows the performance of the artists.
